Alvarez to miss 6-8 weeks with hand injury.

The injury bug has once again struck in Port St. Lucie, but this time it spreads to the offensive side of the roster. Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez has a fractured hamate bone in his left hand and will have surgery to repair the fracture. The recovery for this injury is going to take 6-8 weeks to fully heal which means Alvarez will start the season on the IL. This is a major blow for the Mets and for Alvarez as everyone was expecting him to have a massive breakout season when it comes to the hitting side of the game. Alvarez has been struggling in spring with having a strikeout rate over 50%, but that could come with the left hand injury bothering him .

With Alvarez being sidelined the Mets now have to look for a backup option to Luis Torrens. David Stearns said that the team will be looking at the internal options they have at camp. Those options are Hayden Senger, Chris Williams, and Jackson Reetz. All three have little to no MLB experience, but I truly think that Senger has the edge over Reetz and Williams. Reetz has been with the organization since he was picked in the 24th round in the 2018 draft, so he has familiarity with some of the arms on the staff.

Senger is also well known for being an elite defender behind the plate. In 2023, Senger was awarded the Mets Minor League Platinum Glove Award. If Senger can translate the defensive success he had in the minors to the majors, then it will be a great temporary fix considering Torrens is known for his defense. The Francisco Alvarez breakout will have to be on hold for now.
