We are officially less than one week away from Opening Day for the 2025 season. Which means it is time to make some important decisions when it comes to the 26-man roster that you take with Houston. We are going to look over who I think should break camp with the ball club.
Hayden Senger
When Francisco Alvarez went down with a hand injury earlier in camp it was a big blow to the lineup. However, Luis Torrens can definitely hold down the majority of the catching duties with his above average arm and defense. This means that the Mets have to carry another catcher to backup Torrens and it will most likely be Hayden Senger who has been with the organization since 2018 will get his shot to be the backup catcher. Senger is known for his elite defense in the system for the Mets and if that can translate to the big league club, then it will be a huge bonus to have two above average defenders behind home plate.
Max Kranick
Out of everyone that I am going to list, Max Kranick is the most deserving player to be on this roster. Kranick has been unbelievable this spring posting a 1.59 ERA in 11.1 IP with 14Ks. With a couple spots open in the bullpen Kranick definitely deserves to get the first crack out of everyone in camp. Kranick also grew up a Mets so how can you not root for this player.
Brett Baty
Death, Taxes, and Brett Baty absolutely mashing the baseball in Spring Training. Baty who has made some adjustments to his batting stance this year seems to be a man on a mission. Baty this spring has been batting .354 with 3HRs and 9RBIs with a 1.123 OPS (which is the best in the Grapefruit League). Spring stats in the grand scheme of things don't mean anything, but with Baty pulling the baseball in the air and playing with confidence while learning a new position on top of all of this. The Mets do not need Baty to play like a superstar, but if he can be an above average hitter with an average glove you take that everyday at this point.
Luis Angel Acuna
Once Jeff McNeil went down with an oblique injury this opened up the avenue to have Acuna crack this roster to face lefties. Acuna, who has been struggling this spring only posting .500 OPS in 49 ABs is most likely going to make the roster as a platoon option at second base with Brett Baty. Acuna who filled in tremendously for an injured Lindor in the final games of the season last year gets to show if he is ready for show or he needs more seasoning in AAA.
