As the season is starting to wind down we start looking ahead into the off-season. Part of the off-season process is the tendering and non-tendering contracts to the players that don't really have a clear cut roster spot. I am going to give three easy non-tender candidates for the New York Mets.
DJ Stewart
It is safe to say that the DJ Stewart era is coming to an end. After his big second half in the 2023 season it is no kept secret that Stewart deserved a contract for the 2024 season and it was granted to him. However, Stewart wasn't able to replicate that success from the previous year. Stewart struggled all of 2024 by batting .177 with only 6 HRs in 74 games this year. Stewart was eventually demoted when JD Martinez was ready and never really sniffed the big league club since. The only positive he brought was plate discipline by having a .325 OBP, but that will simply not be enough to keep him around. With Stewart out of minor league options Stearns will look to fill his roster spot with someone who has more versatility and minor league options.
Alex Young
Let me go on the record saying that Alex Young was not bad for the team in 2024. Young was claimed off waivers by the Reds in July and he was solid for New York. In 14 games Young posted a 3.29 ERA in 13.2 Innings with a 123 ERA+. The only reason why I think Young will be non-tendered is because he has no minor league options left so having him on your main roster will make zero sense as you try to have as much optionality for your bullpen.
Danny Young
Danny Young's season is split into two spots: before September and after September. Before September young was rock solid posting a 2.45 ERA in July and August, but then September came. In September alone Young posted a over 10 ERA which inflated his ERA to 4.54 to finish off the year. The bright side is that he did have an average of 11 strikeouts per 9. However, with Young out of options I would take the gamble and bring back Brooks Raley as your lefty reliever off of Tommy John than guarantee Young a roster spot.
