As the football season comes to an end and the calendar turning to February pitchers and catchers will be reporting before you know it. On top of all of this we have finally got the resolution that we all have been waiting for and that is Pete Alonso returning to The New York Mets on a short-term high AAV contract. The contract is a 2 year $54M with a $10M signing bonus. The details of the deal include Alonso getting $30M in the first year with an option to hit the open market again or he can opt back into his deal which would be $24M. Barring any serious injuries or lack of performance this is essentially will be a glorified one-year prove it deal for the Polar Bear.
My overall reaction to this deal is how both parties were able to concede on certain terms that they were set on while negotiating. For Pete Alonso and Scott Boras being able to concede on the unrealistic terms set on the years was clear to me that Alonso wanted to comeback and the Blue Jays rumors about them being at the "ten-yard line" was nothing but smoke. Especially since the Alonso camp made an exclusive offer to the Mets made it very clear he wanted to stay. From the Mets stand point they were able to concede from the AAV standpoint. If you ask David Stearns or any other POBO if Pete Alonso is worth $30M they would tell you absolutely not, but when you have the richest owner in sports that can give you that financial flexibility you can make it worth especially for one year.
This will help Pete and the Mets from a performance standpoint considering he will have Juan Soto hitting in front of him to help take pressure off of him and have more opportunities to drive in runs. This helps the Mets from a long term standpoint because this will not prevent the team from making a full push on next year's prized free agent Vladimir Guerrero Jr. who I believe is David Stearns's top target next year considering him being much younger and more of a complete player than Pete Alonso.
