What else can the Mets do?

Posted by: Patrick Gorman 02/11/2025

The New York Mets had without a doubt the best off-season I have ever seen in my lifetime. From inking superstar Juan Soto to the largest contract in American sports to bringing back Pete Alonso and Sean Manaea to team friendly contracts. This is most certainly the deepest lineup this franchise has had since 2006 and a bullpen that consists of an elite closer with a strong ensemble cast to follow. I think the only real big question mark we have going into this season is the starting rotation.

David Stearns has a reputation of not wanting to give starters a long-term contract when they are on the wrong side of 30. I thought he would break that philosophy this current off-season with the likes of Corbin Burnes and Max Fried out on the open market, but Stearns did not budge. In Stearns defense I would not have given Max Fried the contract that he got with the Yankees with his injury history. However, Corbin Burnes I feel was a deal that the Mets could have figured out given his track record of being reliable and the ability to pitch like an ace. Jack Flaherty was also out on the market for quite awhile and also ended up taking a glorified one-year deal with the Tigers which I thought the Mets easily could've done considering it was a short-term deal.

The Mets were also linked to the trade market when it came to starters such as Luis Castillo, Dylan Cease, and Michael King. The three of them as of now seem to be unlikely as ESPN's Jeff Passan said that it is "less likely" for Michael King to get traded. Castillo and Cease prices are way too high for the teams liking especially with Cease in his walk year and being a Boras client. Now we all had our worries about the rotation last year, but I feel there might be more questions than last year such as Kodai Senga in general and how Clay Holmes will transition to his new role as a starter. I once again hope and I believe that David Stearns will prove me wrong again.
