As spring training officially gets underway it seems that the roster is complete and yes that means the likelihood of Jose Iglesias not returning to the ball club for 2025. When David Stearns met with the media earlier this week he stated "I think where we are now for that role on our team, it's important for us to keep some avenues open for some younger players. It's important for us to have some roster flexibility with that spot". What this means is that Stearns would prefer to give that opportunity to the young guys we have in the system such as Luis Angel Acuna and Brett Baty to fill that void. Iglesias in 2024 was outstanding with the Mets slashing .337/.381/.448 with a 137 OPS+.
It is for sure a tough pill to swallow as Iglesias was such a huge part to the 2024 Mets with his heroics and Latin hits, but that was in 2024. We need to leave the 2024 Mets in 2024 and focus on the 2025 Mets. If that means playing the youth to see what we have or have Nick Madrigal who has a similar makeup as Iglesias fills the utility role takes over that role. Mets fans of course got a right to be upset not bringing back Iglesias, but who knows maybe the Mets swing a trade which opens a spot for Candeltia.
