Mets Kicked Tires On Trade For Tampa Outfielder.

Posted by Patrick Gorman 11/15/2023

On November 15, 2023 beat reporter Michael Marino posted on X that the Mets and Rays had talks for a deal revolving around Manuel Margot before the 6 p.m. Rule 5 draft protection deadline yesterday.

Marino stated in the last sentence of this post is how the Mets are seeking upgrades on the offense side of the game, but Margot is not the guy they should be after. For starters, throughout Margot's career he has not been durable. What I mean by this is that in the past two years he has missed over 130 games combined between the 2022 and 2023 season. The last thing the Mets need is another question mark outfielder on the roster considering the status of Starling Marte is unknown. When you also look at his baseball reference page the Mets would seem to be doing an downgrade rather than a upgrade.

Manuel Margot's numbers are eye popping, but not in a good way. In his whole career as a big leaguer Margot only had one season of where he had a OPS+ of over a 100. Margot also never had a OPS over .730 in his career with his past two season OPS were .686 and .700. Overall, his offensive slash lines just aren't worth the hassle or time for the team to take especially when he is owed 12 million dollars next year.
