Mets are OUT on Sasaki

Posted by: Patrick Gorman 1/15/2025

Earlier this week we started to see teams across the league get informed that they are indeed out on Roki Sasaki. Out of those teams, our beloved New York Mets were one of them. It is most certainly a disappointment for sure, but I always thought the Mets were going to have an uphill battle to acquire Sasaki's services. Sasaki always seems to have wanted the west coast and that is to be true with the Padres and Dodgers as finalists. I am kind of just thrilled that we even got to be in the same room as him.

I guess the next topic of discussion is simply where do the Mets pivot from here? We can start with SNY"s own Jim Duquette tweeting out that Boras and Pete Alonso offered the Mets an "exclusive" three-year deal with dollars being unknown. What I got from this is that Pete Alonso and David Stearns are on the same page with years, but the AAV is probably astronomical knowing his agent Scott Boras. With multiple reporters saying that nothing close to me means that they are indeed stuck on the money aspect as the staring contest continues on the Alonso front.

The Mets starting rotation does indeed seem to be set unless an opportunity presents itself for Jack Flaherty which I hope they take advantage of, but if not the bullpen needs to be bolstered. Will Sammon of The Athletic reported that the Mets did have a meeting with prized free agent reliever Tanner Scott. Scott would be such a huge get for New York. Scott would easily be your set-up man for closer Edwin Diaz creating possibly the best 8th-9th inning duo in the game. Another reason would be Edwin Diaz insurance and what I mean by insurance is if Diaz does hit a wall like he did last year, Scott can easily slide into the 9th inning. Diaz also does have an opt-out after this season, so if that gets exercised the Mets will have Tanner Scott to step in as the closer.
