Mets Acquire Jose Siri/ Non -Tender Candidates.

Posted by: Patrick Gorman 11/24/2024

Earlier this week Anthony Dicomo announced that the Mets have acquired outfielder Jose Siri from the Rays for Eric Orze. This is a very savvy David Stearns move in a nutshell. Jose Siri is well known for his elite defense, cannon of an arm, and speed. Siri ranks in the 99th along with a 97th percentile when it comes to OAA (Outs Above Average) and in Arm Strength. However, his bat is a major concern. Siri batted below the Mendoza line with a .187 Average and a 37.9 K rate which is top in the league.

There are some positives in his offense such as ranking in the 94th percentile in Barrel % and ranking in the 70th percentile in Launch Angle Sweet Spot %. What this means is that when he makes contact he will make an impact. Siri in 2023 posted a .761 OPS with 25 HRs with his elite defense. If New York can get 50 percent of what he did in 2023, then that is a plus especially coming from a bottom of the order type bat. Jose Siri's role will split time with Tyrone Taylor out in centerfield just like how Bader and Taylor split time last season. It seems like the Mets are prepping for a certain one dimensional player that plays right field to potentially join this team in 2025.

The non-tender deadline also happened this past Friday at 8 p.m.. The Mets end up not tendering contracts to Grant Hartwig, Alex Young, and former top prospect Alex Ramirez. Alex Young was solid for the Mets producing a 3.29 ERA in 14 games after being claimed off waivers, but the Mets will be looking to upgrade lefty options for their bullpen. Grant Hartwig in the past two seasons threw over 40 innings posting a 5.14 ERA. His season was cut short after getting surgery on his left knee for tearing his meniscus. Alex Ramirez after having a strong 2022 over the two lower levels in the Minors, but couldn't quite figure it out in AA posting a sub .600 OPS this pas year.

The Mets have also tendered contracts to arbitration players such as Tylor Megill, David Peterson, Paul Blackburn, Luis Torrens, and Tyrone Taylor. Sean-Reid Foley also has signed a one-year contract with the club as well.
