On Tuesday November 14, 2023 The New York Mets introduced new manager Carlos Mendoza to the fans and here are the points that really stood out to me:
1. His Eagerness To Want This Role.
When Mets brass interviewed Mendoza for the managerial vacancy they were all really impressed with his baseball knowledge and his desire to want this challenge and that challenge was to manage in the Big Apple. Not even five minutes into his presser I sensed a man who is very raw and passionate about taking on this role. Mendoza stated in his presser that "it's an honor and a privilege to be wearing this uniform" and that uniform is the orange and blue.
2. The Initial Connection With David Stearns
In modern baseball the relationship between the dugout and front office is a key aspect to baseball whether you like it or not. Another positive that I saw in presser is how Stearns and Mendoza where on the same page during the interview process. Mendoza stated "When they started talking about culture, people, relationships, preparation, I felt a connection right away, because that's who I am". This made me endorse him even more because as fans know the one thing that the Mets always lacked was culture. Whether it was the Lindor/Mcneil scuffle in 2021 or the tension that Scherzer/Verlander had this past year. In order for the team to be a success everyone needs to be on the same page and buy into what the team is trying to do.
3. The Way He Presented Himself
For a first time manager Carlos Mendoza did a great job handling the NY media as his first day of Mets manager. He carried confidence in himself which is something that really pleased me and other fans. I thought his respect for the media members should be applauded because he understands that their job is to relay the news to us the fans that root for this team.
4. His Realization of the Importance of GKR
The last one is a fun one. I thought this was great as every fan should because Mendoza understands the reality of how much we love Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling (can't forget Steve Gelbs). It shows that he admires the trio for what they do and respects them with their call of the games as with their intelligent baseball minds.
After this presser Mets fans should feel less stress about the first time managerial and be more happy about this hiring. Mendoza carried himself in a way that he can relate to all of us by being personable, emotional, raw, and most important passionate about what he does.
