Frankie Montas out with injury

Posted by: Patrick Gorman 02/19/2025

It is not officially spring training until we get a significant injury as camp starts to get rolling. Earlier this week it was reported that newly acquired pitcher Frankie Montas will miss significant time with a high-grade lat strain. Montas will be shut down from throwing for 6-8 weeks which means he will not be ready for Opening Day and will miss the first couple months of the season. If everything goes right in the rehab process Montas should be back in the Mets rotation by June. The starting rotation depth is being tested very early in the season and there is no reason to panic.

For starters, David Stearns has the track record and pedigree to be able to make the adjustments on the fly to the rotation. The Mets also have two viable options that can compete for the sixth spot in the rotation with Tylor Megill and Griffin Canning. It seems like it is a yearly tradition that a starter goes down in Spring Training which leads to Megill being penciled into the rotation and that could be the case again this year. The team could also go to the newly acquired Griffin Canning as the sixth starter too. With Canning coming off being the worst pitcher in baseball in 2024 he is going to have to showcase himself in Spring Training that he can be in this rotation.

The team could also go to an external route with a reunion with old friend Jose Quintana who surprisingly doesn't have a job yet. Quintana who was nails for the team down the stretch and in the playoffs is still out on the open market. With owner Steve Cohen stating recently that he wants to stay under the "Cohen Tax" so any external options seems very unlikely.
